taking care of silver jewelry.

You guys should know how I'm into accessories by now.

And prior to that, I found out I have this allergy to nickel way back then when I was young (10 I think?!) because I just got my ears pierced and a few days after wearing gold earrings, my ears got itchy like, bad. So bad that I kept scratching and hurting my earlobes where the pierce were and my Mum had to take the earrings off.

So I've been wearing silver earrings only, up until now. Even for rings and necklaces (once I wore a gold necklace and developed rash all over my neck -___-"). Later on I found out the reason I'm allergy to gold is because sometimes they have nickels (albeit in smaller percent) whilst sterling silver does not. So yes, while you're happy buying funky jewelries from Topshop, H&M etc; I can just hate you from afar.

So that's why sterling silver and me are inseparable. And white gold too, since apparently for white gold, usually they're plated with rhodium (a substance close to platinum) or silver. (Hence for my wedding ring, I have a SOLID reason why he has to buy me white gold/platinum HAHA.)

Since I have mostly silver jewelry, I decided to learn how to take best care of them especially when silver get tarnished quite often even when it's worn frequently. Like this ring I've been wearing since 2009 :

After the engagement, I rarely wear it anymore so the other day I noticed how bad its condition was. So today I googled how to clean silver, and this came as my saviour.

Tried it at home today, and it works!

So if you have silver jewelry and you want to take care of them, these are what you'll need :
1) 1 cup of boiling water
2) 1 tablespoon baking soda
3) 1 tablespoon white salt
4) 1/2 cup white vinegar
5) 1 sheet of aluminium foil, shiny side up
6) Bowl
7) Polishing cloth (I just use the normal silver polishing cloth, you can use normal cloth if you don't have one)

Cover the bowl with aluminium foil (shiny side up), add baking soda and salt. Add vinegar slowly and don't freak out when you see the reaction. Mix everything and ensure that they dissolve well.

When the water is boiled, pour it into the bowl slowly. Put your silver jewelry inside the bowl and wait for a few minutes - you can see the chemical reaction between the aluminium and other substances inside the bowl (it's a surprise I didn't thought of this earlier - say only chemical engineer pfftt)

Take the jewelry out carefully, wipe with cloth and TA-DA!

So happy that I went around the house looking for silvers to clean lol.

Happy cleaning!
